Index of themes

When examining the themes and subjects of the proverbs, five main themes emerge, each comprising two to seven subthemes. These main themes revolve around being active, sharing and collaborating, fostering social relationships, constructing knowledge, and the various attitudes people may hold. In this index, the subthemes are listed under each main theme, followed by the numbers of the proverbs that fall under that subtheme. The proverbs within a subtheme can constitute a positive expression of the theme or, conversely, reveal a negative expression.

Constructing knowledge

To arrive at solutions that take stakeholders into account, it is crucial that we understand how we construct knowledge: through (preferably direct) observation, by reasoning about those observations via association or cause and effect, and by deciding how to communicate the findings. All this with the realisation that ultimately the truth will always emerge.

The truth will come out: 87, 88, 90, 115, 158, 170, 218.

Positive attitudes include prevention and risk management, patience, avoiding haste, hope, working towards good fortune, and resilience. Problematic attitudes—those that disturb or harm others—include bad habits, prejudices, and self-centredness.
Prevention and risk management: 29, 36, 65, 91, 101, 108, 134, 149, 169, 175, 177, 215, 230, 234, 250, 265, 284.
